Examples of working calendars

I’ve spent ages trying to find the right plugin and Im hoping this may the one. The calendar itself is a little… dull – I just wondered if it can be customised in any way? (roll over with featured image, change colours)

Are there any examples I can take a look at to see what others have done ?
