Adding text to my signup form

I was able to add the signup form as a widget on my site, but I’d like to add a little intro text before the form. When I try to add this text to the form markup area, it shows in the markup area after I save, but doesn’t show up on my site. Am I adding this text in the wrong place? How else can I get text to appear above my signup form widget?
