• I am still very new to wordpress and I’m a bit confused. It doesn’t seem to do what I want without immense layers of complexity. So, for example, if I place an image half way down a page, my expectation is that this is where it will appear when I update the page and view the site. Is that unreasonable? Am I missing something? Is it just supposed to be complicated because complicated is good?

    Looking below this box I see an instruction which says, “Allowed markup: a blockquote code em strong ul ol li.” I’m pretty good at English but what on earth can that possibly mean? Is it supposed to be helpful?

    I think I may have to go back to packages which behave as desk top publishing does because I’m spending hours just trying to do what to me seems the simplest thing.

    Thanks

    Tony

    i will recommend a few resources for learning about WordPress.

    i think it is a good investment to take some time to learn about using WordPress to make your process smoother to create your website.

    Here are a few resources (free and paid):
    BobWP https://bobwp.com/
    WPUniversity https://www.wpuniversity.com/
    TreeHouse https://teamtreehouse.com/library/topic:wordpress
    WP101 https://www.wp101.com/
    WPBeginner.com

    Find a local WordCamp to attend, lots of great resources there too
    WordCamp Central: https://central.wordcamp.org/
    some wordcamps dedicate several workshops to new users

    “Allowed markup: a blockquote code em strong ul ol li.”

    i think you might be referring to selections in the text editor.
    strong=bold for text
    ul=unordered list
    ol=ordered list
    li=list item
    etc.

    Thank you – that’s very helpful. I have already bought a couple of books but one is really just about getting the package installed and producing a couple of simple pages while the other (apparently for dummies!) seems to assume a Phd in computer code. I’ll look at the resources you mention but I’m afraid I’m losing the will to live at the moment!

    getting some hands-on help early in the process will go a long way to make your process simpler in the future.

    find a local WordPress meetup group:

    i’d also recommend getting familiar with at least the basics of html and css as they’ll crop up now and again and you’ll benefit from know your <div> and

      elements and what they do.

    wordpress is intuitive but like everything in life worth doing, it’s not easy. stick with it and learn as you go. once you’re over the initial hump of the learning curve you’ll surprise yourself with how much you can achieve with it in very little time.

    haha, just noticed that i stuffed up the formatting of that last post when referencing html elements!

    trust me, i know what i’m talking about ??
