• Hi
I’ve just noticed a file ‘master.zip’ in the root directory of my website. It contains files relating to ‘search-replace-database’, which I find somewhat concerning. Can anyone explain what it is, where it came from, and whether I need to get rid of it? If it’s part of a plug-in shouldn’t it be in the “plugins” directory?

  • That isn’t typically included with WordPress. What is the date on it?

Did you have any development work on the site?

As said by John, no, that’s not standard, although it may be legit nonetheless.

You can also search on google/bing/duckduckgo/whatever a combination of [ master.zip ] and [ suspicious parts of the code, placed between double quotes ], maybe it will yield results.

I’ve checked with my webhost and it’s nothing to do with them. Apparently GitHub is involved in the development of this bit of code, but I don’t know enough to understand what’s involved. My site works fine. Webhost has suggested I check it’s nothing to do with WordPress, and then delete it. They’ll run a check to ensure the site’s clean. The date on the file says 2014-05-25, but I’m darned sure I’d have noticed it before if it had been around that long. Google search only comes up with one entry appertaining to GitHub – a request to update Master.zip. If anyone can throw further light on this I’d be interested. If not, I’ll delete it and get my webhost to run a security check on the site.
