• I have been testing several plugins for a blog which has a membership section (S2Member) and user-generated content (Contributor user roles).

Have been using plugins like Advanced Access Manager to limit the capabilities of the Contributors.

But now I find that I can’t register new users anymore, and the “Anyone can register” option under General has been grayed out – can’t (un)select it anymore.

Disabled plugins and restored default WP theme – same results.

Any ideas on how to possibly fix this?
(I am no programmer, so detailed explanations please ??

  • It sounds like you might have inadvertently divested yourself of one or more capabilities that an admin is supposed to have.

The easiest way to test this is to see if you can create a new user account for yourself, and give it the role of administrator. Then see what you can do in that role.

The more detailed answer means using a plugin like Capability Manager Enhanced or Members to see whether the administrator role has all the capabilities it should have. Those plugins come with appropriate instructions on their respective forums.

Just tried the plugins that you recommended and according to those the Administrator is indeed able to do everything. No unchecked boxes.

However, when I tried to add another Administrator that role was not available for the new user?

Is there anything else that I can try?
(or should I reset the roles to WordPress defaults using the Capability Manager Enhanced plugin?

I’d reset to defaults. It doesn’t sound like you have anything to lose.
