Yes that is the plugin. I understand it is not supported here, but my question is more general to the role assignments. Is it “normal” that a author or subscriber get access to the dashboard?

The questions has to do with how that plugin interacts with WordPress; you need to ask the plugin devs.

Subscribers can access the dashboard – but they don’t see the menu options that you see. They can see their own account, and any options that themes/plugins have allowed for the subscriber role. If you’re at all concerned, create a new subscriber user for yourself and go to the dahsboard area and see what’s there. I guarantee you’ll see that they can’t do pretty much anything in there.
