Menu & submenu suddenly all messed up

    WP version: version 4.0
    Trouble: I added a new page link into the menu; Saved it and when I returned to the main page hell broke loose on the menu. All parents and children are messed up. some 1st item child became parent.
    The menu structure is in perfect order on the menu admin page. I have not touched anything else css-wise for a very long time.
    Any clue? Do I redo the menu again or there is fix to clean up the mess

    I disabled plugins one by one. no diference.

    In the section gigography ( this can not be seen anymore it is replaced by the its 1st child item 1980) I removed the first item from the menu structure (1980) and it still shows 1980

    Here comes the fix:
    In “manage location”, assigned a menu to its primary location.
    I am not sure why this setting was unset. I can ecollect that the menu was working fine before without this setting….
