Comments in Some Posts are not in Order

I’ve got a couple of posts in which new comments don’t show up at the bottom of the comments list, according to date order, but fall into the list out of order. This seems to happen on posts with a lot of comments. This is not a new issue (that is, it’s not the result of a recent update).

This same issue was discussed five years ago–comments are out of order–but there was no firm solution. Someone opened a trac ticket, but what was discussed and resolved there had to do with threaded comments. My issue has to do with the original comment, not threaded comments, being out of order.
