Here’s my issue after trying to update to WordPress 4.0. I noticed a similar kind of same issue when updating to 3.9.2 but now it’s getting worst. I get the update message and proceed to update my wordpress to 4.0. Everything looked ok but instead of having the welcome page to 4.0, I’m having a mix of 3.9.2 and 4.0 information:

It shows “Welcome to WordPress 3.9.2” heading message and WP logo together with 3.9.2 mention, but then What’s new tab shows Worpress 4.0 “Benny” image.

It also keeps showing the “WordPress 4.0 is available” message on top of my page.

despite the number of times I retry to update, it keeps showing the same issue.

Furthermore, I get blank screen when accessing wp-admin/plugin-install.php, so I can’t get access to uploading or automatically installing any plugin.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong?

    Thanks in advance.

Try a few basic troubleshooting steps:
    – Flushing any caching plugins you might be running, as well as server and/or browser caches.
    – deactivating ALL plugins temporarily to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate them individually (one-by-one) to find the problematic plugin(s).
    – If that does not resolve the issue, try switching to the unedited default Twenty Fourteen Theme for a moment using the WP dashboard to rule out any theme-specific issue.
    – If that does not resolve the issue, try resetting the plugins foldervia FTP or SFTP or whatever file management application your host provides. Sometimes, an apparently inactive plugin can still cause problems (because the hooks remain unless plugins completely removed or some plugins stick around in cached files. So by renaming the folder, you break them and force them inactive).
    – If all the above steps do not resolve the issue, then try MANUALLY re-uploading all files and folders EXCEPT the wp-config.php file and the /wp-content/ directory from a fresh download of WordPress. Make sure that you delete the old copies of files & folder before uploading the new ones. Read the Manual Update directions first!
    – running the upgrade manually via wp-admin/upgrade.php
BTW, if you haven’t already done, always backup everything (including your database) before doing any actions, just in case something really goes wrong. It’s a great safety net.

Hi Tara, thanks for your reply.

I’ve just tried all those things, nothing changed. Even after deleting all old files from server and upload the new ones (the actual 4.0 files) I still get the same issues regarding upgrade message and blank page on plugin-install.php. Also tried to deactivate all plugins, swtich to twenty fourteen (and reinstall again), reset the plugins folder, run the upgrade manuallly…

    Nothing…

Finally I restarted apache service (which might have cleared the server cache) and then it showed the upgrading database message again (as previously did but apparently without any success) and this time everything worked like a charm, no more messages, been able to update plugins, etc. Just great.

Thanks for putting me on the right direction.
