Empty Categories now showing

Empty categories used to not show on shop pages but since the 2.2 / 4.0 upgrades this week they are now showing on my site. I see a few posts from people with the opposite issue – categories they want to seen not showing – but wonder if anyone else is seeing ones they don’t want (either empty categories or ones with hidden products)?
