• Hello all,

I just moved a site from GoDaddy to FatCow (praise the Lord). I’m encountering a couple problems beyond my expertise, as I’ve hardly ever migrated between hosts before.

I thought it would be a good idea to start with a clean install on the new site, so I backed backed up the mySQL database, downloaded the contents of the server via FTP, and exported an XML file from WordPress.

Today, everything propagated and I began to work on getting the site back up on the new server. When I import the XML file (about 2.2 MB), it takes me through what appear to be the normal steps — assigning authors to new user names, asking if I want to import file attachments and media (no, I don’t, I’ll just upload the wp-content folder as the domain name is staying the same). I then get a few “failed to import media file” notifications and it says “all done,” but when I go back to the dashboard — nothing. No posts, no pages, nothing updated at all.

I looked in the actual text of the XML file and really all that i see are a ton of spam comments — I should see the actual content of posts and pages in there, right?

Getting more scared, I then looked in the .sql file I downloaded from GoDaddy before switching over — and I don’t see post and page content in there, either (one odd note: there were THREE SQL databases on GoDaddy when I accessed mySQL via the cPanel. Maybe I got the wrong one?)

Anyway, am I in trouble? The GoDaddy hosting all still exists — if all else fails, is there a way I can try to go back and export the XML file again?

Thanks in advance for any help/ideas.

    Follow-up:

I downloaded each of the four SQL databases that existed: three were of negligible size (<24kb) and one was nearly 200 MB. I still don’t see posts and pages in that SQL database, but maybe I’m misunderstanding how it works in the first place.

OK, one more update: I ran the backup of the largest SQL database again, downloaded it, and this time, I found all the post and page data under wp_posts. So I can at least go to bed tonight knowing that data is in there!

I’m tempted to go ahead and mark this as resolved — I don’t know how to restore from the database backup, but I can figure it out — however, I am still curious if anyone knows why the XML file method is failing.
