WordPress as a CMS/Magazine Cover

That is awesome! I would love to do something similar to create a magazine-style site. While the magazine cover is quite impressive, I would be looking to do everything here except the cover (i.e., the article listing with accompanying photos shown below the cover plus the useful sidebar). I am new to WP and hoping somebody will put a theme plus a walk through of how to create such a site.
