Are you sure you have done step 1 of https://www.nextgen-gallery.com/everything-but-the-image/? Normally you should see them.

I’m not the official developer for this plugin, but I am a regular contributor (in the changelog you can see Niko Strijbol, that’s me).

Also, we won’t go to version 2. NextCellent is actually a fork of NextGEN. When NextGEN updated to version 2, we didn’t like it, so we stayed with 1.9.x ??
