.htaccess asks for password from everyone

Hi. I have my site hosted with IPage and I setup .htaccess to password protect wp-admin folder. The problem is, whenever I go to view my site, as an ordinary user, it pops up with the password request form, even though this is only protecting the admin folder. This can be cancelled and the site accessed as normal but users would not realise this and may not try to cancel the password screen. Have I done something silly with the .htaccess?
