• Howdy,
I am fairly new to the land of blogging. I am doing it on behalf of the band that I am in. You can see the blog in action here…

We are very, very lucky to have the opportunity to open for Rusted Root for the next 3 days and right now I am in a tour bus. I am using a “data card” using CellularOne, which is sharing on the Cingular network while we drive down the road. Anyhow, the internet service is very spotty and highly unreliable. Sometimes it just times out, but sometimes the service is great. I am currently trying to upload 11 pix (each of which are approx 300kB) and it has taken me approx 6 hours and I still have 2 to go. wooohooo!

So, my question is this… manually uploading pix one-by-one is really an inefficient usage of time. How can I just set up a batch upload routine when I know I have strong signal. Eleven pix times 300kB = 3.3MB…this should be a breeze on “hi-speed internet”.

Ideally I would use an FTP to upload because it would detect tranfer problems and retry until complete, but then I dont know how to generate thumbnails, etc.

Searching around the WordPress site is surprisingly bleak. I found a thread over a year old with no concrete solutions. I find 3rd party “plug-ins” with shoddy support and where people blatantly say, “dont use the newest version it is riddled with bugs.” I am surprised at how few solutions there are…or at least talk of solutions. I even followed the link of one of the most promising “plug-ins” in the WordPress official list and the author of the program says on his homepage, I am on vacation until October, sorry. This doesnt make me feel good. I dont wanna be a tech guinea pig, I wanna successfully upload pix en masse when I have the signal strength. While they are uploading, I can write the blog entry and then place the photos.

I really need to make a streamlined process….right now it is inefficient and loathesome.

    thanks for any suggestions!

So today I have 38 images from yesterday’s events, which totals 12.7MB. There is no way that I will use the standard WP upload interface, nor even the “soderlind” plug-in to upload the images one at a time….no way. I am using the “soderlind image manager” plug-in now, and it is nice, but only one at a time, which is not acceptable.

It times out most of the time anyway and I will have to sit there and babysit the thing for probably 4-6 hours with luck. So instead, I am using Filezilla right now to upload the pix to a folder on the site. Filezilla is awesome. It is free and it keeps AUTOMATICALLY retrying every time there is an error, so the upload process is fully automated (although lengthy due to retries). This is how uploading images should be!!!!

The problem now is that I have a folder full of images, but no thumbnails….and I dont know how to “drop them into” the new blog post.

Well, frenchy, you could try the 1st plug-in on the WP official plug-in list. It claims to do exactly what you want…

    ANIga gallery (https://www.animalbeach.net/aniga/)
Manage your Pictures in Categories and Albums; Uses the WP page and comment system; Upload Pictures with FTP or as zip archive on the Admin pages; slideshow; automatic thumbnail creation; layout with templates.

It looks great at 1st glance, but going to the website does indeed throw a few red flags…

RedFlag#1: “This is an early release of this plugin. Some things might not work properly, some features are still missing. USE AT OWN RISK! I appreciate any feedback!”

RedFlag#2: “I am on vacation – Thailand, Laos and Vietnam are waiting. So i wont be able to answer your questions until the 20th of october.. But you can check out the support forum, maybe someone can help you there!”

What year is this guy coming back?..and why do I want to use a peice of software that gives me risk? Well, frenchy, beggars cant be choosers…try it and hope your computer still works so you can let us know how it goes.

    good luck,
    frenchy

ps-Does anyone else have any input?

Autogallery looks cool too, but the site is in a completely different language that I cant identify and there is no English version.

Why do I feel like I’m on the outer fringes of the internet here? I just wanna upload pix en masse to my blog.

I feel like I’m asking about overclocking a video card or something.hmm…

    thx,
    frenchy

i had the same problem. FTP’s will not work because after uploading the file, WP makes some entries into its database for every file uploaded before it “SHOWS” up

the way i do it is i found a plug in that lets me upload images in batch mode when I CREATE the entry (10 at once)
its called batch-image.php – i forgot where i got it on the web – you can email me at [email protected]. bye. if you find something that works with FTp/filezilla let me know – i would use it too
    cheers
