Placing Similar Posts in functions.php File

Hello,
I have a quick question. I would like to place the similar posts php call into my functions.php file in order to append similar posts of an article to my rss feed.
Right now, when I place similar_posts() within the feed, nothing shows up. How should I go about getting the contents within similar posts to show up within my feed? From what I can tell, it doesn’t have to be placed within the Loop.
Can someone tell me how to accomplish this? Thanks!
