• I was looking at my postmeta table to look at some of the custom fields I have been using. I saw that every post had a _pingme row and a _encloseme row (posts where I edited other fields had two rows of each).

What do these do? Why are they being made even though I am not specifying them when I make a new post? Is there a way to stop them from being made if I decide I don’t need them in my database?

They are inserted with the post in order to signal that they have not been processed for pinging and enclosures yet. Eventually, the pinging process will take care of them and process those posts. When it does so, that metadata will be removed for that post.
