Plugin causes white screen of death

  • I have the Askimet plugin but it is not activated. A new release of Askimet became available so I did an update of Askimet and when I clicked on return to plugin list I get a white screen of death.

    So I tried deleting the plugin. It removes the files but gives me a white screen of death.

    Then I tried deleting Askimet via FTP. It deleted but gave me another white screen of death.

    Other plugins act normal.

    Any thoughts on what to do next?

    I need to add that I downloaded Askimet from wp-content/plugins and uploaded it to my localhost site. Askimet worked just fine there, I was able to update it, delete it with no problems.
