• I’ve got a couple of blogs, with the Option setting “Users must be registered and logged in to comment” checked, that have comments entered by non-users. They are held in moderation, but … how is this possible? I’ve double checked the user lists and there are no rogue accounts. These are definitely comments, not trackbacks.

    Thanks in advance!

  • It might be because they are hitting the comment file directly and not doing it through convential posting (as most spambots do).

Interesting. How can this be prevented? I run Akismet, Spam Karma 2 and Bad Behavior on my ‘open’ blogs, and have never had this happen. SK2 and BB are awesome. I never really bothered with these plugins on other blogs because I thought requiring login was enough. I guess I’ll need to install and configure those as well…

I would if you have the space because they all stop unwanted behavior and spam attacks.

Do you have registration enabled? If so, they could be registering and then posting spam.

It’s actually most likely trackback spam. A search on that keyphrase herein will probably turn up numerous posts re same; the fix is generally the usual array of spam plugins.

I do have registration enabled and did check, there are no bogus user accounts.

You are right vkaryl, I too suspect trackback spam, it’s odd that it’s never been a problem until now for us.

Looks like our base install will need to include Akismet, SK for Akismet, and BB. I have those running on one of my “open” blogs and they do a FANTASTIC job together.

Yes, I think no one can any more plan a “closed” blog stay that way without help. Too bad, too; but at least there IS help – using the available crop of spam plugins.
