• I have one website that has a public section and private member area. Would it be better to separate the two into different sites? Would this allow both sites to operate faster and reduce the risk of attack?

  • Hey there…

I don’t think this is necessary.

Are you having performance issues? Pages loading slow?

What prompted you to ask the question?

The site really drags. As a customer/user, I would have given up waiting for the pages to load and moved on.

I have been operating this site on a Windows server and I understand moving it to Linux would make it run better and faster.

I’ve been having the “Connection Lost” error which no one seems to take responsibility for or know how to fix. The Server, Plug-in Authors and WordPress all claim it is the other guy.

If I’m going to have to redo this site, I want to eliminate as many issues as possible. It just seems to make sense that if one area gets messed up, the other site isn’t affected.

    More questions:

    1. Who is hosting your site?
    2. What plugins are you using?
    3. What is your traffic like? How many pageviews a day?

Agree that Windows is not the best solution. Linux/Ubuntu is gonna be your best bet there but there are a lot of things you can do to tune performance. we need to understand your current state first though.

    1. Amazon – Free tier – Micro
    2. 42 Different
    3. Still in test phase. So far just me. So if it’s this slow with one user, can you imagine how slow it will be when it goes active?

I figured I would have to move it anyway or upgrade beyond the free tier.

    42 plugins????

    Yikes.

Are _all_ of those absolutely necessary or just “nice to haves”?

You can improve performance by minimizing plugins.

One plugin you really should have is some sort of caching strategy. Like batcache or W3Total Cache. Those will improve performance drastically.

Free is never actually “free”. You’re always gonna take a hit somewhere there.

The cache plug-ins all seem to work only with Apache servers. This is one of the reasons for having to move.
