    I’m curious:

On the live demo website for the Tracks theme, the first post has a “custom excerpt” displayed underneath the post title and above “Read the post”. The text of this custom excerpt isn’t in the post itself, and I haven’t figured out how to write a custom text for this excerpt. Does the theme indeed have a function for custom excerpts such as this, or is it there simply for the demo site?

Either way: how is the text that’s displayed next to the post on the blog post chosen? Is it a certain number of words from the beginning of the text of the post, or is there some other way to easily guess what the excerpt is going to say?

So WordPress has 3 different ways to create excerpts:

    1. Automatic

Tracks automatically limits excerpts to the first 15 words and strips out any images and other markup.

    2. Read More tags

You can add a read more tag to include however much of your post you want. This will also keep any images, links, or other markup intact.

    3. Custom Excerpts

Lastly, there are custom excerpts that don’t contain markup, but can be any text you want. There is an “Excerpt” meta box below the post editor where you can add a custom excerpt to be displayed.

If the Excerpt box isn’t there, scroll all the way to the top of the page and click on the “Screen Options” tab in the top-right corner. Then, check off the “Excerpt” box and it will show up below the post editor.

Neat. I had indeed missed the excerpts check box under screen options. Like I said: I’m kind of new to WordPress ??

    Once again, thanks.
