I am using WordPress version 3.5 and have been advised (by my web designer) to avoid updating unless absolutely necessary. He said if it is working then leave it. an Update might clash with plugins / themes and ruin my site.

My site has been running fine up until today. Suddenly all my plugins vanished.

I have run a scan on Sucuri and it can’t find anything malicious but it does recognise that my WordPress version needs updating.

    My question is…

Could NOT updating my WordPress version result in ALL plugins vanishing?

Or does it sound more malicious than that?

    Many thanks,

    My website is https://www.gibsonglobalsearch.com

If your site was hacked, yes.

    Thanks Esmi,

As I say, Sucuri does not find any malicious threat. So could all plugins be lost just because my version of WordPress is outdated? Or does it sound more complicated than that?

Also, I backed up my site files and database a few days ago so hopefully I can restore it. If I do restore it will my plugins return and will their settings return the same?

Thank you again for your response,

    No. That shouldn’t happen.

I’m afraid that’s impossible to say for sure.

Whoever advised you not to update needs to be kicked into touch and have their web developer credentials forcibly removed from them. Preferably with a blunt spoon. Were you aware that your site is currently running a very real risk of being hacked? See https://blog.sucuri.net/2012/03/wordpress-understanding-its-true-vulnerability.html

You need to upgrade WordPress asap. As you have such an old version of WordPress, you will now need to carry out a series of smaller manual upgrades. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended for the full details.

Thanks Esmi. Indeed my site was hacked. Our site developers have managed to remove the malware and restore the site, thankfully. We have now invested in good security software! Thanks for your support.
