• I just started using the Post Snippets plugin by Johan Steen. Snippets allow you to insert a section of oft-repeated code into a page by including a shortcode, allowing me to update several pages at once.

Our website is an artist gallery, so there may be many posts by a particular artist. We use the snippets to repeat boilerplate text and links at the bottom of the post. An example post is here: store44.com/?p=3595

My question: Is the use of the snippets plugin having a negative effect on our SEO or is just that the SEO plugin can’t see the content of the snippet shortcode? When I erased the text on the page and replaced it with the shortcode, the post went from having “Good” SEO to “Bad”. Is google still picking up this text when the page gets rendered or is the Snippet plugin hurting our SEO across the board?

    Thanks!

  • Hi!

Likely the evaluation done in the SEO Plugin does not expand the shortcodes, and therefore do not see your keywords.

Google, on the other hand, does use a fully rendered version of the page (including even most javascript), so the actual SEO should not be impacted at all by this.

If you register your site with Google Webmaster Tools (you should if you are doing SEO) you can “Fetch as google” to see the data that googlebot sees, under the Crawl tab.

(disclaimer: I’m not the author of this plugin)

johanronstrom may not be the author, but he’s totally right!
    Thanks for helping out here.
