Front page and blog page

OMG!!! I have a headache, being trying for almost 12 hrs to get a slide, a static welcome page and highlights on my front page. It’s just not happening!!!
I’m also trying to set up a blog page.
Please tell me what to do!! I’m using the sugar & spice documentation but it’s not working. I’m not seeing anything showing up. ??
Please help!!
