Upgrade PHP server?

    I’m trying to install WordPress but I’m receiving an error message saying I need to upgrade the PHP server on my domain. Is this typically something I can do on my own, or does the server admin need to do this for me, or some combination? I tried to access the ‘PHP server’ section in cpanel, but there was no option to upgrade–it only displayed information.
