Extrememly Basic Install Questons

  • Obviously, I’m trying to set it up…. but the “readme.htm” says to “upload everything” –> I’m assuming FTP it to my hosting server. I did that. Now it says to “Open /wp-admin/install.php in your browser” —> does this mean to open my IE and go to “File–> Open” and locate the /wp-admin/install.php file and then open it? I tried that and all it does is show the text file called /wp-admin/install.php.

    Why is that? I really don’t know what I’m doing. I know quite a bit about computers and basic web pages, but I’ve never place scripts in them before (my own, that is).

    Is there a reason my IE browser opens this a just text instead of a page?

  • It means go to https://yourdomain.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php

    “Open in your browser” means browse to the script’s location on your server in your browser. So, if your site is at mysite.com, and you installed WordPress in a /wordpress directory, you should open the URL https://mysite.com/wordpress/wp-admin/install.php in your browser.

    BTW guys every time you use an address like YourSite.com or MySite.com some site parking twit gets another hit or twelve.

    The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) has reserved an url or two specificly for examples.

    If you use Example.com, Example.net, Example.org, or Example.info you are not going to be helping deliver traffic to someone you don’t know anything about. These four Example.TLD (top level domain) addresses are IANA_RESERVED and you can use them safely.

    Note that other example sites like .US .be .dk .de .co.uk etc are all owned bu different companies. Only use the four mentioned above.
