• Hello together,
something is really annoying to me. I had now several times that Images are getting lost and are completely gone!

What Kind of WordPress are you running?
Multi User Installation with some other Webmasters.

    What Kind of Images?
    Banner, .gif files, Small Icons

How do I get them up?
I just use the Media Uploader of WordPress, take the URL and add it as i do need it.

    Where they are used?
After i had uploaded them, they usually get inserted into a Sidebar Widget or directly into the *.php File to create a desired effect.

Were they really online and visible before?
    Yes! Definately.

    Did you delete the files?
For sure not! Files that are one time uploaded do not get touched anymore, as long there is no reason to do so.

Other Images are still visible and online?
Yes they are. All normal Posting related Images are still fine and online.

Is that the first time you encounter the problem?
Sadly, no. It happened already several times where the Image was used the same way.

The Example this time is a small Star Gif that i had added to some Text in a Sidebar Widget. Worked perfectly and everything was fine.
Now after several updates i have to see, that the image isn’t found anymore, I plainly get the 404 Error message. Checked via FTP, the file is GONE. It was uploaded October 2013.

My idea is that WordPress automatically deletes Images that are not ‘connected’ to a Posting, is that possible? I couldn’t find anything that would mention that behavior, but it does look like it.

Or is there something related to the Updates? I do them with the normal automatic function, and maybe at that time it also cleans up unused Files?

Maybe someone ran already into the same problem as i did and has a solution so that won’t happen anymore.

    Kind Regards

    [ No bumping please. ]

    Please don’t bump your posts.

How do I get them up?

Are the images missing from the Media Library as well?

If not, what happens when you paste the URL into the browser?

    Where they are used?

You shouldn’t edit the php files directly like that. When you need to add media to the THEME (not the content), you should upload it via FTP.

Have you asked your hosts about any backups?

Sorry for bumping, but after i didn’t got a reply i thought it would end up forgotten in the depth of the board ^^

Are the images missing from the Media Library as well?

Yes, they are gone like they would never had existed.

If not, what happens when you paste the URL into the browser?

As they are missing in the Library AND Server (checked via FTP) i get a 404 error message.

You shouldn’t edit the php files directly like that.

I am having a hard time getting in touch with child themes and none of my themes will be updated, because usually they are custom made, nothing from the WordPress Themes Pool.

When you need to add media to the THEME (not the content), you should upload it via FTP.

Seemed more easy with the Media Uploader, never expected that something would get deleted if not used the way WordPress expects me to do.

Have you asked your hosts about any backups?

So far not, could get the problem solved with personal backup.

The reason I am here asking about that was more to find out why it happened, to prevent it. Well, if I do use FTP it can’t happen anymore, but that would still keep the Question up if WordPress DOES delete by himself files that are “unused”.

So you edit the child themes directly, via FTP ?? That’s the right way about it.

the Question up if WordPress DOES delete by himself files that are “unused”.

    Answer: No. Never. Ever.

The only way that MIGHT happen is if you have a plugin that does it.

I do pre-edit my Themes (not child themes) offline and do other changes (fine tuning like missed english words, missing images, adding hard coded ‘widgets’ above/below all others) directly online *headscratch*
Never thought if that could be the wrong/right way. Usually I have of the Themes 2-4 Backups.

Here is a List of my active Plugins:

    Globally activated Plugins:
    Antispam Bee
    BWP Google XML Sitemaps
    Conditional Widgets
    EWWW Image Optimizer
    Quick Cache
    Tagcloud (customized Plugin for Tagclouds)
    WP-PageNavi
    WP Permalauts

Plugins that are in the ‘Main’-Blog activated:
    Login LockDown
    Multi-Site Site List Shortcode
    WordPress Database Backup

Plugins activated for each Blog himself:
    O3 Social Share

The only one that is related to images would be “EWWW Image Optimizer” so that images are progressive and stuff, for faster load times. So that could be the source of the troubles?

    Kind Regards

Widgets and stuff you set IN wp-admin pages are fine. And if your theme has an editor for the header and background, that’s also fine. But there’s a difference between that and things you want hard coded and not to change.

I would turn off the backup plugin, personally, as well as EWWW Image Optimizer.
