• WordPress 3.9.0 introduced a nice little feature: You could drag media (e.g. images) right into the editor window when compsing (or editing) an article, without having to click the “Add Media” button first.

The matter at hand is, ever since I upgraded to 3.9.1, this nice to have feature has sadly been broken. I can no longer drag media in the editor window, because the “Drag to upload” window simply doesn’t appear, and still dragging them there does nothing. So I have to click the “Add Media” button again every time I want to add an image etc. to the article, just as it was before 3.9.0.

It would be great if you could fix this, so you can upload media by dragging it into the editor window, as it was in 3.9.0, without having to click the “Add Media” button.

Finally, a request: If you upload media using the article composer media uploader (by clicking the “Add Media” button), you get a link to the file you just uploaded right after the upload.
However, if you use the media uploader from the left side panel (Media > Add file), you don’t get a link. Instead, you must click the “Edit” link after the upload, for every single file! Especially if you uploaded several files at once, having to click the “Edit” link for every single one of them just to get the link for the file is a serious nuisance. Could you make it so that when using the media uploader from the left side panel, you get the link for the file right after the upload, without having to click the “Edit” link for every single file? That would be awesome!

I use this feature myself in WordPress 3.9.1 just a couple of days ago. It’s a neat feature.

Have you tried performing any basic troubleshooting such as deactivating all of your plugins and switch to the Twenty Fourteen theme? These are temporary steps and could help you find where the problem lies.

    Hi

I am experiencing something similar. I can’t upload files anymore anymore.

Tried drag & drop, tried the browser uploader and finally tried the AddServer plugin to make sure it’s not the theme and not the actual upload process. All I get is a blank media entry in the media library.

I have a very basic installation running, only theme, Akismet and that’s it. Before upgrading from 3.8.3 to 3.9.1 everything worked fine.

    Regards

There, it’s not just me who’s having this problem.
Plugins and theme are exactly the same I had when using 3.9.0, where the instant media upload worked fine.
None of my plugins touches the media uploader in any way (stuff like Antispam Bee, BackWPup and W3 Total Cache… and yes, I’ve cleared all caches, repeatedly).
It has to be some of the changes that you did to the media uploader from 3.9.0 to 3.9.1 which broke it, so that the instant media upload doesn’t work anymore.

Did you try any of Jan’s suggestions?

As expected, turning off Antispam, Cache and so on just was a waste of time, it didn’t change anything. (How should it, after all, as they’re all completely unrelated to media upload.)
What did you change in the media uploader from 3.9.0 to 3.9.1 that made things break?
As I said, I had exactly the same plugins with exactly the same theme in 3.9.0, yet the instant media upload worked just fine.

Right. How did the step go when you did this part too?

and switch to the Twenty Fourteen theme?

Have you done any other troubleshooting? The media gallery is very dependent on javascript so following these troubleshooting steps may be useful too.

There is no magic bullet for these situations. Something is not working on your installation and without finding out what/why then it’s not going to be fixed on your install.

This article contains a list of files changed.

This problem really is local to your installation and you need to find what the conflict is to fix it.

I’m having the same problem now.

But it’s not the same problem, and since the version of WordPress that this thread is regarding is old I’ll go and close this thread to avoid any more confusion.
