• I am new to WordPress and have been doing fine so far but recently I tried to use FileZilla to download a copy of our site to my computer… as a backup in case of any future problems!

All I did was drag all the files from the root folder (server pane on FileZilla?) to my computer (local pane on FileZilla?) to make a copy… now my website is still there but just very very slow… almost not working at all.

A friend of a friend apparently said this is a fairly easy fix but I am stuck and not having any luck searching online to fix this!

Any help is greatly appreciated ??

  • Does you credit to think of taking a backup. However, there are a number of plugins available that would come in very handy for that task. They will help you also get a backup of your MySQL database, where all of your content lives.

Did you somehow delete anything from your server when you copied it down? Or accidentally rename a file/folder? Try getting back on FileZilla and comparing the copy of your desktop to what’s on the server.

Your file transfer might be unrelated to the slowdown (unfortunate timing), contact your tech support and explain the issue. Be sure to tell them what you were doing.

Thanks yeah I though I was just being pre-emptive and it might come in useful someday in the future rather than actually causing the problem myself!

I don’t think I have deleted anything. I went back on FileZilla and compared the number of files and directories under orgi, wp-admin, wp-content and wp-includes and they all have the same number of files and directories in them on FileZilla as on my computer. Granted I haven’t gone and individually checked each and every single file though? Also the file size on my computer for each folder appears to be larger than the one on FileZilla? Maybe I should just copy it all back from my computer… (though knowing my luck that would just make it worse!)

I am almost certain I didn’t delete anything, all I did was drag them across but am worried I have done now and don’t want to mess it up even more

I will contact tech support, when I find out who they are ??
