Possible Solution: Image uploads failing

I hope this will help some people. Image uploads have been failing for me ever since I installed wp 3.9, and then, on discovering that the images existed after the failed upload, trying to get them to display was also failing.

I went through a lot of steps which did not work, before I discovered that (for me, at least) UNchecking the box in Media settings which is next to ” Crop thumbnail to exact dimensions (normally thumbnails are proportional)” solved both problems… that of the http upload error, and the non functioning display in post.
