I have been using the Fast Secure Contact Form in combination with the Contact Form DB to obtain pdf files with a size of up to 20mb. Meaning users had to provide their name, email, etc. and then uploaded their pdf file through the contact form on the webpage.
I used to receive an email notification about every uploaded pdf and as long as the pdf was smaller than 10mb it was also attached to the email. In addition, all submitted information were stored in the Contact Database, including a link to the uploaded pdf file and I was able to download all pdfs from there.
Now I have been trying to use this for the first time in a while again and it is not working anymore. I can only upload pdf files up to a size of 5mb and I don’t get a link to the file in the database anymore. Instead, the link directs me to the page it was uploaded from. I realise that this change is most certainly down to the updates for both. Is there any way to reverse this again or can I restore the old features in any other way? Somebody else set this initially up for me and so I am very much lost in this. Any help is very much appreciated.

  • Hi Hirse82, if you are using your host e-mail services have you asked them if they have changed any of your e-mail settings? Have they put a limit on the file size?

What version of WordPress are you currently running?

    Kind regards

    Hi mbrsolution,

Thanks very much for your answer. I don’t think my email settings have changed. To be honest, I don’t mind not getting the pdf files as an email attachment. I am quite happy to check the Contact Form DB every day for new submissions.

    The problem is rather that:
    1. I cannot submit any pdf files bigger than 5mb through the form anymore (used to be 20mb).
    2. The submitted pdf files are not stored in the Contact Form DB anymore. Before there was a link in the database to the submitted pdf file and I could download it from there. Something like this: https://www.webpage.com/wp-content/uploads/pdf-file-name.pdf
Now I still get a link (if the file is smaller than 5mb) but it redirects me to the page it was uploaded from.

I hope that makes more sense now. I am using WrodPress 3.5.1

    Thank you very much!

I forgot to mention, I checked the “Attached files maximum size allowed” settings in the Fast Secure Contact Form Settings. It is set to 20mb and if I click on “help” it tells me: “Your server will not allow uploading files larger than than: 20mb”.

So I guess, the server settings are fine and actually I should be able to upload files up to a size of 20mb?!

Hi Hirse82, thank you for your reply.

Your WordPress version if very old. You should upgrade as soon as possible to at least 3.8.3. Of course it would be best if you went all the way to 3.9.

Once you upgrade to one of the latest version test again and see what happens. Also if this was working before what changed on your website to have this feature stop working?

    Also you mentioned the following.

It is set to 20mb and if I click on “help” it tells me: “Your server will not allow uploading files larger than than: 20mb”

However on my website when I click on Help it tells me 2mb. Are you sure it says 20mb on your website?

    Kind regards

    Hi mbrsolution,

Thank you very much for your quick answer. I updated WordPress to version 3.9 as you suggested. All other plugins are up to date as well. Unfortunately, it has not solved the problem.

Only two things have changed since I used this uploading feature the last time:
    1. I updated the two plugins.
    2. I took the page with the contact form out of the menu. The page itself remained unchanged and is still online but does not appear in the menu anymore.

I double checked about the 20mb. It is indeed saying 20mb. As mentioned above, this entire plugin was set up for me and I believe that the person changed it to 20mb so we can upload bigger files.

    Thank you very much!

Hi Hirse82, I suspect that something has changed on the server side. You will have to get in contact with your host and asked them if anything has changed since you set up your website. I believe they have put a limit in place and that is why you can’t upload anything higher than 5mb.

    Kind regards

    Hi mbrsolution,

Thank you for your last post and sorry for my late reply. I was in contact with the hosting company to check if they have changed anything or can locate the failure.

They have not changed anything and the upload limit per file size is set to 20mb on their end. They are suggesting that it is most certainly down to the updates on the plugins :-(.

    Thank you very much!

    Little update…

I have been testing and it has changed (in a minor good way) for some reason.

    1. Uploading files up to a size of 1000kb: Everything is working great. I get an email notification and the file is attached. The database is storing all information including a link to the file to download.

    2. Uploading files up to a size of 5000kb: I get an email notification and the file is attached to the email. The database is storing all information but the link to the file is not click-able.

    3. Uploading files between 5001kb and 15000kb: I do not get an email notification. (This makes sense as my email doesn’t allow any bigger attachments than 5000kb.) The database is storing all information but the link to the file is not click-able.

    4. Uploading files between 15001: and 20000kb: Upload does not work. I end up on a white screen and nothing works anymore. The database shows only the basic information which were provided in the contact form but the other columns are blank, such as the link, IP address, time etc.

It would be great if anybody has got an idea how I could fix this. I know very very little about these things but it almost seems to be a twofold issue to me. I am guessing there might be a time out issue with the bigger files but there seems to be something wrong with the database as well as I don’t get the links at a certain file size anymore.
As described above, all settings (server and contact form settings) are set to a max upload file size of 20mb.

Thank you very much for your help!!!

Hi Hirse82, looks like you are almost there ??

Have you upgraded to WordPress 3.9.1, which address some issues?

In regards to your questions above, I suspect that the problem might not be related to this plugin. I think the problem might be related to Contact Form DB.

I have been reading the Contact Form DB forum and some are reporting issues with the latest version of WordPress and or PHP version. However this might not be your case. I guess it would be a good idea to ask your question in their forum because from your reply above Fast Secure Contact Form plugin is carrying out the task correctly with the exception from the following.

You are only reporting an issue after you try to upload files between 10,001: and 20,000kb. The reason why I change it to between 10,001: and 20,000kb is because you have reported success up to 10,000kb.

In most cases very few people load files larger than 10000kb because most host don’t like it. And yes you did mentioned above that your host has upgraded your account to accept 20,000kb = 20megs.

I hope this puts you on the right track.

    Kind regards

    Hi mbrsolution,

Thank you very much for your quick answer. I suspect that the recent improvements are indeed down to the upgrade to 3.9.1. Ever since the update it is at least partly working again as described above.

I will follow your advice and see if I can get some help in the Contact Form DB forum.

Thank you very much for all of your help and have a great day! ??

    Best wishes

Hi @hirse82, how are you going with this issue? Also can you update to the latest version of this plugin.

    Kind regards

    Hi mbrsolution,

Thank you for following up on this. I did the update but the problem is still the same. I guess, it is really related to the database plugin as you pointed out.
Unfortunately, it does not seem like the database is still supported as there is just no answer to any posts. Hence, I have been looking for alternatives and found the simple dropbox plugin. It is not quite as nice and doesn’t provide as much functionality (no name form, no CAPTCHA etc.) but I think it will probably do the job since I was mainly looking for something for submitting larger files. And it actually works which is a clear advantage ;-).

Thank you very much for all your help!

    Best wishes

Hi @hirse82, I am glad to hear you found another plugin that will do the job your require ?? well done.

If your question has been answered could you mark this support thread as resolved.

    Thank you kindly.
