I have installed WordPress both on a local machine (for development) and on my VPS. My local version is 3.8.1 and the version running on my VPS is 3.3.1. The VPS is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS and WordPress was installed from the repository.
Both are functioning and I can use the themes that came with the installations.
What I can not do is get my custom built theme to work on my VPS. It works wonderfully on my local machine.
I transferred the files via ftp. I checked the permissions and ownership of the the files to make sure that they matched the other themes installed on the VPS and still no go.
I am only interested in getting the theme to load, I don’t need the sql database from my local machine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is a link to my website so that you can see what I get when the theme is activated.

  • can i ask why the wordpress version on the VPS is so old?
Is it possible to install 3.8.1?

    What you got?
White screen while trying to edit Style.css?
I’m having this issue, if it was the same of yours, please let me know how you fix it.

@robey I am using the wordpress 3.3.1 version because that was the version that is in the ubuntu 12.04 repository. Do you think that the version differences is what is causing my problems? I’m using Easy Phpdevserver to develop on.
@eric I developed a theme from scratch Eric, so yes I was doing work on style.css but I was also doing work on everything else as well. Everything works on my localhost running 3.8, just not working on 3.3. So, not sure that we are experiencing the same problem. Once I get this figured out, I will post what I did here.

You can run WordPress 3.9 on EasyPHP

Well WP is over two years old, so I would start by upgrading it to 3.8.3 or 3.9

Well, took your advice Robey and upgraded WP to 3.9 on my vps and that did the trick. The only reason I didn’t before was that it was so simple to install from the repo, however that as you pointed out was giving me a very dated version of WP. Anyway after the upgrade I uploaded my theme and it installed.

Thanks for the help all, really appreciated!
