I ran a Pretty Link through Bitly and posted it to Twitter only. The counts are quite different. Bitly says the link received 11 hits, while Pretty Link counted 43. Pretty Link’s stats say the same IP addresses clicked the link 10+ times, which appears to be a bot. Why are these counted as unique clicks, even though they occurred within seconds of each other by the same iP? Is there a way to avoid this? Would checking “nofollow” reduce this error? Any tips would be helpful. Thanks!

  • I had a problem that may be related to your problem.
I had hundreds of hits from my own server in less than an hour.
I have tried to understand what happened without much success…
Those hits also show as uniq hits to me.

    Any Ideas what happened?

    Thanks,

Try enabling the option to Filter known bots from the hits counts. That should limit the number of hits on your links. Hope that helps!

    Thanks for the response!
Actually the problem is from my own server.
I have tried to understand what is happening without success.
It doesn’t really solve the problem but I configured to exclude the IP from my server.

Yeah, if you know which IP is hitting your links (some hosts do that by the way), you can block those IP’s as well.

Yeah, I blocked the IP but I would like to understand why my server is doing that.

Some hosts have bots that crawl your sites looking for potential malware, spam etc.

Another possibility is that WordPress itself could be scouring the links in an “Attempt to notify any blogs linked to from the article” which is an option in your WordPress -> Settings -> Discussion Settings page.
