Gallery all over the place

Every year or so I seem to run into a load of grief with this plugin. At the moment the thumbnails seem to be out of sync. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
Another problem I am having is that it is stretching my portrait photos, making them unviewable. Again, any tips greatly appreciated.
