[Theme: X] Changing header color and space behind content box

I knew learning this would be a lot of work but I’m sitting here feeling like a total noob. In my attempts to change the very top header background color, as well as the color of the background just behind the content boxes I have come up with nothing after browsing many other threads and fixes.

I’ve inspected the code in that specific area and I’m not even sure what I’m looking at. I’ve attempted to add different lines from other support pages in the Jetpack CSS editor to no avail. I’m really at a loss here and hoping that one of the experts here can figure out my (I’m guessing relatively easy) problem!
