• I have a site with Voyage theme and use posts for the slider on the “homepage.”

So when I went to create a page dedicated to a blog, it, of course, posts the slides along with any other posts that are there.

Is there a way to limit which posts appear on a blog page or separate them so I can determine which posts are specific to blogging only?

I’ve created categories for the posts (slider, blogg, other, etc) already but don’t know exactly how to keep the slider posts of the blog page.

I’ve been a programmer for decades, creating websites from scratch but am not too familiar with php and am new to working with WordPress.

    thanks in advance!

The site is sandramcteague.com and I have posts but—maybe unfortuneately—one category (slider) is being used on the homepage so I don’t have a static homepage.

I’m really at a loss as to what to do here and appreciate your help…

The Simply Exlcude plugin might help.

vlxyzzy I installed the plugin called Simply Exclude but can’t see how it keeps the posts that are the slders off the page that I hope to devote to blogging (and it will only be one page on this site that’s a blog).

Can you help with that? It’s the page called Sandra’s blog…

Maybe I’m not being clear: Ob the Voyage theme it has a built in slider but you have to use posts for it.

Now I want to have a page just for regular blogging and when I designate it a “blog page” the slides show up.

My question is: how do I keep the slider posts separate from any other posts that have yet to be created?

I know I can put them in different categories but how do I keep one category off the blog page (because those posts are being used on the homepage in a slder)?

OK, I don’t quite understand your setup. You seem to have a page dedicated to blogging, but you say you don’t have a static home page. That seems to be a contradiction. Please post your settings for ‘Front page shows’ on Admin->Settings->Reading.

I think that’s the problem: that I don’t have a static home page because I took advantage of the fact that I could just slip slides-—as posts—-into a slider “built into” the Voyage theme’s home page.

I could make my honepage static but then I’d have to download a plugin for a slider and that may be more trouble than I want get into. (although I will do it if I have to…)

In Admin>Settings>Reading my font page displays “my latest posts” and the only other choice I have is assigning other pages to post onto my front page/home page.

And let me repeat: I DON”T have a static home page. It has a slider that uses posts for the slides (that’s something that the Voyage theme allows).

    Am I missing something here?

In your case, Simply Exclude will not work.

How did you create your page to show as a blog?

I created my page as an ordinary page, or, at least it is so far because whenever I set it up for blogging it puts all my posts on it and I don’t want that; I want to figure out how to separate categories of posts first and then I can make the page one dedicated to blogging.

I feel like we’re not speaking the same language here…

I just created the page, like you create all pages in WordPress and it doesn’t show as a blog yet because I haven’t be able to learn how to keep some posts out (sliders) and some posts in (blog posts)

The thing is, regular Pages don’t normally show blog Posts. Until I can understand how you get the Page to show Posts, I can’t figure out how to get it to omit the slide Posts.

Can you get the Page to show all Posts? If so, tell me how you do that.

I am not 100% familiar with the theme you are using in particular, however I have used some themes with a similar operation, where the slider itself pulls in content from the ‘posts’ section.

Typically you can assign the slider to only pull from a certain post category. I recommend checking for this setting and creating a category for ‘slider’ if you are able to do so.

Then you should be able to go to appearance->customize and change your blog page at the bottom to a specific page you create.

I have created a category called “sliders” and a category called “blogg” and a category called “other.” Now the question is how to keep my category “sliders” off of the page I want to dedicate to just blogging, a page entitled “Sandra’s Blog.” THAT was my original question but maybe I didn’t express it in the best way.

When I go to Appearance>customize there is no option for specific pages,, only
    Site Title and Tagline
    Colors
    Header image
    Background Image
    Navigation
    Static Front Page

First, get the Page titled “Sandra’s Blog” working to show all posts. Then describe how you did that. Once we know how you did that, we may be able to say how to exclude a category.

Until you can get the page working with all categories, there is very little way we can guess how to exclude a category.

    Vlxyzzy,
When I first set up the site, months ago, I set up the page (in the regular way you set up any page in WordPress) identically to the way I set up all the other pages on the site.

Then I went into Pages>edit page>Page attributes and set up the template for that particular page to “featured blog” (I also tried the other templates: Blog (full posts), & Blog Summary/Portfolio) and in each case all of the posts came up on the screen even though they were of each category: Slider or Blogg so I went back and set the template to “fullwidth page” since if I set it up to the default template, the sidebar shows the widget I’ve setup to display her therapy session descriptions and also this 3-tabbed thing (categories, tags & archives) that’s now been pushed down between the page & the footer and I can’t get rid of it even if I delete all the sidebar references in the footer.php and page.php files.

In any case, the page works fine; it just shows ALL the posts no matter how I’ve set it up.

(are we still communicating “on the same page”?)

If I understand correctly, the Page is now set to the ‘fullwidth template’ and shows all posts. Is this correct?
