• I have purchased a new domain for my blog and made it the primary one (thailandredcat.com, before it was redcat-travel.com it’s still active for another 2 months). I have changed the WordPress URL and Site Address in wordpress general settings and resubmitted the sitemap with the new URL. That’s all I have done.

This was one month ago and since then the traffic is now totally down, from more than 1,000 pageviews a day to now not even 200.

If I google search “thailand redcat” not even one of my pages shows up. The sitemap however has successfully been submitted:
    https://thailandredcat.com/sitemap.xml

Do you know what could be the reason for this and how can I solve the problem and get the search results and eventually traffic back to normal again?

Any help would greatly be appreciated. Cheers!

  • When you move a site to a new domain, you should set up 301 redirects so the old URLs point to the new ones. I think it’s possible to do every URL via a simple command in the .htacess file, assuming the permalinks are following the same structure.

    This might help – https://stackoverflow.com/questions/8450573/how-to-301-redirect-an-entire-domain-while-preserving-the-path

The .htaccess file should be on the server of the old site/domain.

Your hosting company might be able to help.

Thank you for your answer. However I’m not sure if I understand you right, I think the URL’s have already been updated, no? If you look at the sitemap you will see that all URLs have the https://thailandredcat.com/ prefix:

    https://thailandredcat.com/sitemap.xml

My understanding is that you have moved your site to a new domain, and you want to take the traffic from the old site to the new one.

    Is that your goal?

I looked at your site again – you already have some redirects in place, but your old domain doesn’t redirect to the new one. Perhaps you should set it up so it does.

When you move a site like this, it can result in a drop in traffic, but it should come back once Google has re-indexed all the new pages and understood the redirects.

WPMade Easy, thank you so much for taking the time to look into my issue and trying to help me. I greatly appreciate it.

Yes I also think that it might take some more time for google to recognize all the changes.

Indeed, when you type redcat-travel.com it still doesn’t redirect to the new domain. Do you know how I can change that? I was planning to let the old domain expire anyway, or would you think I should still keep it for a couple of years?

    (@stefanredcat)

Regarding your question, yes that’s right, all I wanted is to change the domain (URL) of my blog from redcat-travel.com to thailandredcat.com.

I would keep the domain for another couple of years as you may have lots of links pointing to it. You can use this site to find out – https://www.opensiteexplorer.org/.

You should contact anyone who links to you and ask if they can change the link so it points to your new site. This way, you don’t lose the links and you can let the domain expire next time around.

With regards to redirecting the domain – use the same method you used for the inner pages. Can you remember what that was?

With regards to hosting – I’m not sure on this, but I think you have to keep the hosting going for the redirects to work, especially if you used cPanel or a plugin. I would keep it active until all the new pages are indexed, the cancel it. Again, it’s not a lot of money and you may get a pro-rata refund.

    Hope this helps?

Thanks again for your reply. How about the issue if I google “thailand redcat” but none of my pages shows up?

I have just discovered something: In my sitemap file, the main URL (https://thailandredcat.com/) is missing:

    https://thailandredcat.com/sitemap.xml

How come it is not listed?

I see a one of your pages when I Google “thailand redcat” – learn-thai is result number 6. Again, it’s due to the redirects and the transition period. Your old domain is still number one.

I’m not sure, it should be. Try rebuilding the map.

    (@stefanredcat)

By rebuilding you mean resubmit it? I don’t know how to build a sitemap manually except submitting it via google webmaster tools.

The plugin rebuilds it for you. Just login and go to the plugin page and look for “rebuild the sitemap”.

By the way, your redirects aren’t working any more. Have you changed something?

    Thread Starter stefanredcat

    (@stefanredcat)

I’m just trying different things and I have turned off the redirect plugin. I have turned it back on now. Btw, how can you see my redirects?

Thank you for the tip with the sitemap builder plugin, I’ll try it and then let you know if that helps.

    (@stefanredcat)

Now I have a new problem: The redirect from redcat-travel.com to thailandredcat.com is working, but now the pictures are not loading anymore! example:

    https://www.thailandredcat.com/is-khaosan-road-worth-all-the-hype/

I just typed in your old domain. I also typed this – site:https://redcat-travel.com/ – into Google to which pages are indexed, then clicked on the links.

Take another look at the plugin as the redirects still aren’t working.

    Thread Starter stefanredcat

    (@stefanredcat)

I have rebuilt and resubmitted the sitemap, using a different plugin. Now fortunately the homepage is included:

    https://www.thailandredcat.com/sitemap.xml

I also solved the picture problem.

Let’s wait for a few days and see how the traffic is recovering.

As for the redirection: I have now successfully redirected redcat-travel.com to thailandredcat.com, however the different pages lead to a 404 page, example: https://redcat-travel.com/about/
