Is it a server thing, sometimes a 404, give 5 seconds and reload and the page is there

    Is there a solution?

Yes it’s due to the server, the request to download the page on system is sometime taking much longer time than expected causing 404 error. Again when the server response is good, it serving the page successfully.

You need to speak to your host regarding the same, this may be due to the Bandwidth provided.

talked to a tech at blue host and he writes

“I noticed a guy that replied to your post mentioned this could be a bandwidth problem. I think that could definitely be a possibility as I’ve seen it before. However, when I’ve seen it in the past; visitors will see page that displays, “Error establishing a database connection,” and not 404 (not found) pages. Doesn’t mean it’s not possible though. Do you know how many visitors your site gets on average? Also, are you on a shared or pro hosting account?”

    any new thoughts?

Aaand we’re now into hosting conversations.

Per the Forum welcome, we close topics like this due to the amount of spam that they attract. The WordPress team has provided a list of a few recommended hosting providers. For more details and other recommendations, please search through the forums or via Google (or your preferred search engine).

Note: By closing this post I neither support nor condemn the use of the servers listed on the www.remarpro.com official hosting page, and encourage you to search around.

I’m going to reopen this topic in order to allow discussion about the issue at hand.

Note that we don’t allow discussion of specific hosting recommendations and such on these forums, because they’re very rarely useful or productive. So don’t go there. But if you’re having problems, then those problems can be discussed all you like.

If you’re getting frequent 404’s or “database connection” errors, then this is a sign of two things: overloaded server, or too much traffic for the account. The bottom line here is that no amount of optimization or plugin trickery is going to solve this problem. You need a more beefy host. You can’t run a site that gets 10 hits a second on a $5 a month host. Like it or not, webhosting is pay to play.

So, if you’re having trouble on a lower tier hosting, move up a tier. Maybe look at a VPS or something. Or a better host that has better experience with WordPress and such. Some hosts offer optimized hosting systems for WP. The bottom line is that you need to figure out where your traffic is, how much of it you have, and then choose a system that gets you the most for your money.

And if all you want to do is write a blog and not worry about this sort of thing, look into managed hosting instead. It costs more, but you don’t have to deal with low level hosting issues. Thus the “managed”.

Thank you for your service and correcting my mistakes! Your answer feels the most complete on this topic. I continue to learn as i go and am not always the best. Missing the mark just means i can learn more and be better next time. Thank you for that opportunity.
