    I’ve tried Iconic One on my site and it works, so there is no problem with plugins.

    However, when I try a child theme with just a style.css in it (I’m using another child theme currently so I know what the file should say). The content only is displayed (most recent post and two widgets) and not the layout/template.

    Just to prove the point, here is the contents of style.css in the child theme ncr14:

    /*
    Theme Name:     ncr14
    Theme URI:      https://themonic.com/
    Description:    A child theme.
    Author:         Peter Wade
    Author URI:     https://peterwade.com
    Template:       iconic-one
    Version:        1.0.0 */
    /*-------------------------------------------------- */

    Since it is a live site (www.newcreaionrealties.com), I’ve reverted to my old theme, but I wanted to upgrade to a new responsive theme.

    Thanks,
    Peter

    Well, a child theme’s style.css file usually has a line like this in order to import the parent’s CSS file:

    @import url("../iconic-one/style.css");

    Is that in your child theme’s style.css file?

    Thank you, CrouchingBruin. I sure missed that line! All is now working.
