Settings in WordPress for getting indexed with Google
-
Hey all, I am seriously hoping someone replies to this, and I am simply asking if there are any more settings in WordPress other than in Reading (the checkbox that says “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”) that would prevent a WordPress blog from being indexed?.
Please let me know, as I noticed that I might have by accident set that first setting, which I just checked off. I’m having trouble getting my new WordPress blog indexed with Google and Bing (yeah and Bing). Thanks in advance if anyone replies :).

Look into specific SEO plugins that may help you getting your site in the search engines. A very popular one is WordPress SEO by Yoast.
Thanks, I installed it. Is there really any configurating for me to do?, or is it just an automatic plugin?.
Its configured out of the box. Also make sure you have an appropriate site map tool to submit your sitmaps to google.
Example plugin here:
Alright, thank you. I used the plugin you suggested. So, after looking at my PC Robots.txt Settings, it shows this:

Should I set all of that in the settings to “Allow” if i want to be indexed by Google?.
Also, with that plugin I’m using, it shows a different robots.txt file than the one that I have in my default WordPress folder, which shows this:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /feed/ Disallow: /trackback/ Disallow: /wp-admin/ Disallow: /wp-content/ Disallow: /wp-includes/ Disallow: /xmlrpc.php Disallow: /wp- Allow: /wp-content/uploads/ Sitemap: https://example.com/sitemap_index.xml
Should I organize this? anyone?.
The Robots.txt on your PC is filled with settings for specific search engines/bots (and basically blocks them all). Don’t worry about that one. The one in your WordPress folder (you weren’t clear if that meant in your WordPress folder on your PC, or the WordPress folder on your server/site?) is already much better, but not perfect yet.
In there you basically say which directories CAN be accessed by search engines (in your case, only “/wp-content/uploads/”) and which ones CAN’T (pretty much everything else).
I would say at least also allow “/wp-content/”, so in order to do that, change:
Disallow: /wp-content/
to
Allow: /wp-content/
I’m not an SEO expert so I can’t give you much more detailed advice, but if you go through all the settings in the WP SEO plugin by Yoast, you’ll find a lot of explanations and instructions.
First of all in your WP admin, go to Settings tab -> Reading Settings and make sure you have unchecked “Discourage search engines from indexing this site”.
