Sharing Information in Multisites

Hi
I was considering using multisite as a school site where i could use a few sites using a basic template as the departments and use the main site as the home. Is this a possibility.
Also I would need to try and display information posted on one site and get it to display on another, say a teacher put some info on maybe the maths site could it be flagged up on the others with maybe a meeting date or something.
