  • The parent directory is /wp-content. It needs to be writable to WordPress in order to create the uploads and sub-directories. You can usually work around a server configuration issue like this one by temporarily changing permissions on the /wp-content directory (0666, or sometimes 0775 or 0777) so WordPress can create the directories it needs to. Be sure to put the permissions back where they were afterwards.

Thanks for the reply, how do I make the parent directory writable? Is it something I need to modify in my FTP? I”m still new to this whole thing.

See if you can get help from your hosting providers about this.

The technical support for my host is terrible, haven’t been much help at all to me. I’ll try putting in a ticket though and see if they may be able to help.

There is also some great reference material on the subject here in the Codex, if you like. It might help to explain a little bit about permissions in general, and what can contribute to the error message you’re getting. Changing File Permissions
