I’m trying to activate the akimet spam filter. It’s calling for the WordPress.com API key . I’ve gone to my profile page to find it as directed, and there is no 12 number API key there.
    thanks

Thanks, I read through the thread provided above and tried that approach–setting up a blog directly through WordPress and getting the key that way. I did get a key, but it’s not working on the wordpress blog I have through bluehost.

I’ve emailed WordPress for help. I’ll let you know how it gets resolved.

    thanks!

I cut and paste the key into the field, and it worked. I was thinking I then needed to hit the update button, but you don’t. If the key shows in the field, that’s all you need.

OH! Thanks so much for that last comment. I was having the same problem and it kept saying the key was invalid. I shall go try again.

    I’ve read

    and
    https://faq.wordpress.com/2005/10/19/api-key/
    and
    the RTFM comments
    and I’ve registered
    and
    checked my registration emails
    and
    looked in ‘my profile’

I still can’t find any API key number anywhere.
    Any other ideas?

    Thanks in advance

I’m having the same problem as Fishbottle. It’s not showing up anywhere for me.

Your API key will be available in your wordpress.com profile. You need to register there to get a key, even if you don’t want to set up a blog at wordpress.com.

Once you’ve done that, you can copy the key to your own site.

If you have registered at wordpress.com and can’t find your API key, you’ll need to ask there.

I am having a problem obtaining my API key as well. I have tried four times today to register for an account for my self-hosted WordPress Blog, waited forever for the registration emails, and none ever came. SO I did what the site told me to – clicked the notify them link to email and get the info sent out, but you can’t do that unless you have a wordpress.com hosted blog. The emails never came – they are not in my spam, nor in my junk folders, nothing. Help?

This is crazy. I am having the same troulbe and no one seemas to know what to do. The place that hosts my blog doesn’t have an API key for me. WordPress says they don’t host my blog so they can’t help me. I want to get the BlogStats plugin to work but I need my API key.

    Astazio,
don’t double post – just read carefully the answers you were given!

I have a wordpress hosted blog utbtkids.wordpress.com and two other blogs, https://www.desibioscope.net and https://www.utbtkids.com.

I use the API key from my WP hosted blog for utbtkids.com for Akismet spam protection and for stats, it works beautifully.

When I tried using the key for https://www.desibioscope.net, for stats, it does not accept the key.

    Any suggestions?

I am also in the find the API key loop … amazing how frustrating a simple thing can be, eh?

It’ll make more sense after you read the responses above and realize that wordpress.COM is not the same as your WordPress blog.

I have read all of the above messages and I am still having this problem. I am trying to set up a Youtube account to post videos to a WordPress blog hosted independently. I signed up for an API key with WordPress, but I don’t know how to use this key with my existing blog?

Once you’ve done that, you can copy the key to your own site.

Can you elaborate on this? Where in WordPress do I add the new API key? I cannot find it anywhere.

Thanks in advance for your help
