Website has been up and running for 2 years. Recently noticed the ‘Howdy, admin’ message is missing everytime I ‘view’ anything (page, website ) from the dashboard. Top wordpress toolbar and ‘Edit this page’ link are both missing too. It’s as if I am no longer logged in, but the back button always takes me back to the dashboard where I am still logged in. No error msgs. Caches are cleared.

    Only seen when logged in.

I’ve deactivated every plugin, reinstalled my theme (Elegant Themes, Chamelon) and reinstalled the database. Switching themes to Twenty Fourteen, same problem exists.

    Can this be fixed?

  • Hi cahardy,

I had the same problem. I searched the forums and came up with this:

    link to log-in-disappeared?

it worked for me. Initially, I got the problem after I installed the fourteen colors plug-in. I deleted it and then moved my META widget (I had moved it out of the content bar) back into the content bar. And now I get a widget that shows the log-in. There’s other items in there that I don’t want, so now I have to figure out how to fix it. But now I can at least log back in to my site. Hope it works for you too.

Thanks, but I think I have a different problem.

I can always login to the dashboard, but when I switch to ‘Visit Site’ I loose my login. When I view a page after editing or creating it, same thing, wordpress admin toolbar at top of page is gone.

Turned DEBUG on (wp_config.php) which resulted in error msg: Undefined variable: cookies ….wp-super-cache/wp-cache-phase1.php on line 660. So this was my clue…

I deleted wp-super-cache & my problems disappeared. Apparently deactivating the plugin was not enough. I’ll mark this topic as resolved; hope it helps someone else.
