Puzzled About WordPress Location

    I have built websites before using editors that are installed onto a computer and then the site is uploaded via FTP.

    I cannot quite work out, though, whether WordPress is installed onto a computer in the same way and then the files uploaded or, as I think is the case, you are working live on-line the whole time.

    Could anyone please clarify this for me?

    If I am correct and it is on-line, live, is there a way to work off-line and simply publish the results?

    Finally, can a WordPress site be edited with a different web application at all?

  • WordPress is a database driven web framework which requires a web server to run. This web server can be either local (on your own computer) or remote (hosted).

    By installing a local web server on your computer, you will be able to set up and run WP on it. There are many to choose from for various operating systems. Refer to this link to get an idea:

    If you decide to develop locally and then move the results to an online server, refer to the relevant section in this:

    There are pros and cons to developing locally and moving and also with developing remotely. Personally, I develop remotely. Your “mileage” may vary ??

    Generally, all “editing” of WP is done from within the WP dashboard. Adding content, adding extended functionality (plugins), layout (themes), etc. However, there are always options. Have a look at this article on how to build a WP site using Dreamweaver:

    Thank you for your advice and suggestions. I am gald that I had not misunderstood the basic concept, at least.

    I shall have a look at the links for working locally and uploading to a server to make sure that I understand it before starting.

    I did notice, though, that one fo the guides mentions oddities about the way Windows 7 interacts with WordPress. Does anyone know whether WordPress will work on Windows 8 if I use the same staps as for Windows 7?

    I already have a host and a couple of live sites, so would much rather work off-line than run even the faintest chance of interrupting the live sites.

    I’ve never had any issues using WP with Win 7 or Win 8 and 8.1.

    By “working on” and “interacts with” these various systems, do you mean running locally? If so, again, no issues with any of them using my fave local server “stack”, The Uniform Server.

    Thank you for your answers. I contacted my web host firm and found that they have a one-step WordPress installer on the controlpanel (only just been given access – just used FTP before to load files). I have now installed WordPress and it is working perfectly on Windows 8.
