Theme: Twenty Eleven; displaying the sidebar on smaller screens

I have been looking at the various (closed) discussions on how to ensure that a Twenty Eleven sidebar always gets displayed even on smaller screens such as ipads and iphones. Without that sidebar present people new to my site will miss the point completely. All the advice seems to involve complex changes to CSS style sheets. I have tried the simplest advice (to comment out the line “<meta name=”viewport” content=”width=device-width” />” but that doesn’t seem to work for me (and I’m not even sure it was a good idea doing that).

What’s the latest position on this? Can anyone provide a clear simple fix for this? Does the latest version of Twenty Eleven (1.7) fix the problem (I am using 1.2)? Can anyone advise me of another similar theme to use which will display sidebars on all screens?
