How to make simple thumbnail list with captions / click-through images

Hi there – I’m trying to do something relatively simple and can’t figure it out. I need to make a list of images – probably 100 when done – thumbnails and a caption for each. It doesn’t need to be a caption specifically, but I need to make it clear that it’s linked to the pic in question.

I also need to either make a link in the caption or make the picture with a (click-through) external link – if anyone knows how to do this I’ll be most impressed, as I’ve looked in a few places and cant find anything.

Ps – I’m using Nextgen if you know some triacks with that, or the default WordPress imager.
