– limit login attempts is installed and I realized that there are always attempts. Is there a way to make my blog saver? The Username is not “admin” anymore and I have the timeout there 1000 hours.

Login to PHPMyAdmin (or host provided db access tool, that one is most common) and optimize the wp_options table (actually do so for all). That should help for now, but will not fix whatever is filling up the table. You can review the type of entries that are cluttering it (by reviewing that backup) and often pinpoint a faulty plugin, theme, or hopefully not, a hack.

You must have a full db backup just prior in case of error in processing.

Thanks a lot. Since I don’t even get onto the database with 3 GB Stuff loading, I have my provider doing a backup and have it newly inserted. I have the feeling that I messed up somthing trying to clear cache and “optimize” my Blog.

May I ask some more info/questions hereon?

1. The two links are very interesting, however, I would like to have a tool to clean out cache and unnessary stuff if possible. Like “cleaning” my blog.

2. Is it “normal” to have unwanted login attempts at all? I’ve heard by chance from that and installed the plugin “limit login attempts”. Only than I saw that unwanted user tried to log in. Do I need to live with it or do I have a chance to secure the blog further more?

3. Is the plugin “updraft back/restore” ok to use? I also used that plugin a few days ago and now I have the mess. I don’t know if this may have caused the problem with 3 GB on table “wp_options”?

4. I would like to have the comments functions reopend. However, I’m filled with spam and more unwanted user. So, I closed it down again. do you have a good working tool, that I could use without having sleepness nights about spam and hacks?

5. Do I need to do some other important things to secure my blog? It is only voluntary work for my parish (although for 6.000 people…)

1. You need an expert who is a MySQL dev or etc to look into the database issue. If you have a good host, then they should have one in their employ.

2. Unfortunately, many WordPress and other sites run on varying platforms have been hit with what are called brute force attacks. A brute force attack is generally done from a network of compromised computers controlled by thiefs. Their goal is ultimately to gain admin access to your site and gather user information, especially if financial or even personal information can be retrieved by being stored in your database. Limiting login attempts is a good way to stop a brute force attack. See 5.

3. I do things manually and do not rely on plugins for backup of my site files or database. I have no specific advice on any plugin claiming to be harmless (but know they can and have caused many headaches by being used improperly) in a plugin approach.

4. There are techniques to block comment spam. I have written about Using WordPress to Block Comment Spam. I also further suggest a more advanced registration process, such as can be done with WP-Members or other commercial Pro Product and only allowing comments to registered/logged in users. This requires moderation and for a large site that means time and money. That said, allowing unrestricted access to the comment system can and will cause your site to include spam links, be removed from search as a result, and perhaps even blacklisted. Look also at Askimet.

Hi there, well the backup was inserted, however, it still is very slow. The table “wp_options” is 2 GB big and I don’t know how to deactivate plugins there and even optimize the table to get the site running again.

I do need an expert … how to finde one??? It is just a page for the parish but well visited and needed.

You need to ask host what you can do with server level MySQL options.

You can deactivate all plugins and anything left wandering by renaming the plugins folder to old-plugins.

Have you asked your host about this? If they cannot help, inquire with a host who can help with these issues. Don’t expect the fixes to be free. Also, you need to ensure anyone you give access to your site is fully qualified for such work. Asking randomly for work that requires full site access can be problematic.

well, the host is very good! The helped me out and the site is running again. I think a picture gallery messed it up.
