Like happened to other users, visual editor stopped working for me after upgrading to WordPress 3.8. This is no new issue for me, as I’ve had the same problem in the past. In fact, this is my single most annoying issue with WordPress.

I am using WP in Italian and the last time I run into this issue, about one month ago, I solved it by renaming “wp-langs-en.js” to “en.js” in the /wp-includes/js/tinymce/langs/ folder (maybe this can work for others in the same situation).

However, this trick is not working for me this time. I have also tried all other solutions suggested in other threads, such as clearing the browser cache, trying with different browsers (IE, Firefox, Safari and Opera), deleting and uploading the wp_includes folder, disabling all the plugins, disabling and re-enabling the visual editor from the user page, reinstalling WP 3.8.

Unfortunately none of these attempts worked and right now I don’t know what else I could try. This is a crucial issue for me because is affecting another function of my theme that is very important, therefore any other advice is welcome. Thanks in advance.

Any news about this issue? I’m having same problem too. Yesterday, I upgraded to WordPress 3.8, and now the Visual Editor is gone.

I found, WordPress 3.8 dislikes my Opera browser. If I login to my sites using Firefox, everything seems working correctly. What browser are you using? Have you tried to use Firefox?

I’m Using Ubuntu Linux 12.10, Opera 12.16 and Firefox 26.0.

I’m stuck with this too. I’ve tried the suggestions I’ve found in various forums including those mentioned above.

    I’m using
    Firefox 26.0
    Chrome 31.0
    Safari 5.17

All have no buttons for the visual editor and white text over a white background.

Hello, I’m back the report what I found. There was something wrong with my Java/JavaScript that cause the visual editor missing. I reinstalled Java and deactivated/reactivated JavaScript on my Opera, and now it’s working correctly.

FWIW I’ve just solved mine too, at least I think I have. I was looking through other forums and suggestions and one of the common things that came up was to try disabling plugins. I disabled everything I had and reactivated them one by one.

It appears that my problem was something to do with a contact form named WP-Lightform. If I enable it, my visual editor disappears. If I disable it again, it’s back to normal.

Hi Handoko and Sandy and thanks for your feedback. I’m glad you managed to solve the problem with your visual editors. Unfortunately for me, I am still struggling with mine.

Since posting my first message, I have realized that the visual editor starts working again if I switch to the default WordPress theme. However, that is not a viable solution for me because my theme has some particular features that the default WP theme has not and therefore I have to stick with it.

In the past I had already noticed some changes with the visual editor when using different browsers, but this time it doesn’t show up in any of the main browsers (IE, Opera, Chrome, Firefox, Safari). Same for the plugins. When I tried disabling all of them, the visual editor was still missing.

In fact, the visual editor appeared again from time to time and I have noticed some slight changes when using different computers, but most of the times the visual editor doesn’t work with my theme and the pattern of its behaviour is still quite mysterious for me.

I hope that this will get magically fixed with the next WP release (but I’ve read that I might have to wait for another couple of months for that, and of course there is no guarantee that the visual editor will work even then). So, in the meantime I am going to re-try out some of the suggestions found online, including the two that worked for you.

What theme do you use that have issue this the visual editor? I’m using Weaver II theme, it has no problem. Have you tried to contact the theme author?

The theme I am using is Compare by Awesem. I have tried to get some help from them as well in their support forum but I could not get any advice so far. They are usually quite helpful, but Christmas time probably did not help. However, I have realized that the visual editor issue can have so many causes that it can be very difficult to solve. Or at least it can take a lot of time to figure out.

The good news is that I have finally found a workaround for the visual editor to work and I hope it will last even with future WP upgrades. I have realized that in order for the visual editor to work with the Compare theme on my website, I need to load the single post/page editing page with the text editor selected and then switch to the visual editor. Indeed, if the visual editor mode is already selected when I enter the editing page, it won’t show up, even if I switch to the text editor and then back to the visual editor.

There is clearly some kind of conflict between the Compare theme (on my site at least) and WordPress, but I could not identify it for sure. As I wrote before, I have also tried disabling plugins, but the problem was still there. However, as long as this workaround works that’s fine with me.

I’ve visited the Compare theme website. I wanted to download it and test it on my WP 3.8. Unfortunately the theme is not free.

You mentioned you ever have such issue several times. WordPress was working fine on my sites, only after my PC have problem with its Java (Script) installation. I searched the web, this Visual Editor issue is rarely discussed. I think the problem is not the WordPress itself. Not mean to blame Awesem, but you know, other themes are working correctly with WP.

Have you tried to disable all the plugins? Maybe there is a plugin, that cause the problem.

@simorame If you haven’t done this already install and activate “Use Google Libraries” then check if it solves the issue and also I’d suggest you to disable all plugins then reactive one by one and hopefully you’ll catch the trouble maker.

I am having the same problem as @handoko. The theme I’m using is: Theme 45009 and Cherry.

This is the steps I did in an attempt of troubleshooting:
-deactivating all plugins to see if this resolves the problem. If this works, re-activate the plugins one by one until you find the problematic plugin(s)
-adding define(‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false ); to the bottom of your wp-config.php file (just before the require_once line)

    Any other suggestions?

I also installed and activated Google Libraries, but still no luck.

It could be browser side issue. Have you tried to used Chrome or Firefox?

    abqhch

    (@abqhch)

I just tested Safari, Chrome, and Firefox. No luck.

    (@abqhch)

So I just tested it and it works on Internet explorer on a PC, but the other three do not work on PC or Mac….

    (@handoko-zhang)

You said it works on Internet Explorer. Is the Internet Explorer on the same computer that didn’t work when using Safari, Chrome and Firefox?

It could be the computer problem, maybe the Adobe Flash Player or Java. You can try to update the Adobe Flash and Java to the latest version.
