images very slow uploading to Media Library

When I upload jpgs to the Media Library it takes ages. An example: one small logo only 24kb took over 2 minutes.
Other threads have suggested that it’s something to do with filesize, but this is clearly not the case here. I also renamed a jpg (124kb) with the extension pdf, and it uploaded almost instantly.
Probably a server problem – we host our site on our own server – but what is it and how do we put it right?
